Ever since we moved into this house, I’ve been fighting a losing battle with my backyard. Everything looks great from the front. We have a freshly sodded yard, a clean driveway, and good landscaping. It looks nice and suburban. The backyard is just a mess, though. I don’t know what it is about this side of the house, but we can’t keep a good patch of grass for anything. It was originally sodded, but it eventually got eaten up by weeds. Now it’s just random patches of grass in the midst of dirt and weed patches.

One day, I decided I was going to grow a garden. I know what you’re thinking. Why would you even bother with a garden when you can’t grow grass properly? I had just gotten tired of looking at that mess back there and wanted to try to make something of it. I looked up a few greenhouses and gardening stores on Canada 411, and got some advice. I picked up some good soil and potted plants, as well as some flower and vegetable seeds. I even got some flower bulbs and made beds around the trees. I thought my family would like those and maybe leave me alone about how futile the whole thing was.

Well, with some good advice, a lot of work, and a whole lot of patience, I managed to keep that garden in good shape all the way through the fall. I spent a lot of time picking weeds, spraying fertilizer and applying insect repellent. But I also spent a lot of time picking beans, melons, tomatoes, and peppers out of the garden I grew myself. They were all quite tasty, too. My family was quite complimentary. As for the flowers, they didn’t do very well, but they bloomed. I think they’ll do better next year. They’re already doing pretty well, if you ask me.
