As America continues to struggle with ways to overcome its dependence on foreign oil, many people are looking for ways to buy an electric car. Powered by renewable energy, these vehicles help reduce the need for gas and leave less of a carbon footprint on the earth. If you want to purchase an electric car, you may need to find ways to save money. You might consider shopping online using discounts like BuyCostumes.com coupons or other promotional offers to save up to 80 percent on items you buy. Then put the amount you saved into a special account for your electric car purchase.

It can also help you to have a goal in mind. Do you want a Tesla? This car company puts electric cars into a whole new class. From sleek sportscar designs to top-of-the-line electric engines, you can really enjoy Tesla’s line of cars. The Tesla Roadster is one car that looks good enough to match the styles produced by top luxury car designers like Mercedes or Porsche. It features lithium battery cell ions to power the engine. You can even recharge the battery by using a solar panel carport instead of parking in the garage.

Tesla’s line of cars may be outside of your budget, but there are other less-expensive options for electric cars. While there’s no doubt Tesla cars look great, you may care more about having any electric car rather than the top of the line. When you start shopping for an e-car, you’ll want to make a list of features you want. Do you need a battery that can last for 12 hours without recharging? Do you need a car that can reach speeds of 85 while allowing you to run the AC? Not all electric cars offer the same features, but making a list can help you get the one you want.

If you are old enough to have read Scholastic News as a child in school, you will recall that as late as 1992 they were declaring confidently the notion that by the time a person who read that magazine was old enough to drive, electric cars would be the norm on the roads. Needless to say, this does sound a little on the foolish side from a 2010 standpoint, since electric cars are still only occupying a fairly low percentage of the total automobile population. But as the technology grows into wide spread acceptance, and the notion of plugging in your car stops sounding absurd to most people, the idea of a society full of electric cars is sounding more and more realistic.

You have to admit that not so long ago, electric cars were a pretty large gamble. While they weren’t exactly poker tables, the idea that people would give up the ease and reliability of gas powered vehicles in order to drive something that might lose their charge in a hurry (like a kid’s remote controlled car would do) sounded like the punch line to a bad joke. And considering how powerful the lobbying agencies hired by major oil companies tend to be, a politician advocating electric cars in any but a theoretical sense was often playing Russian Roulette with his career.

However, in this day and age, the technology for hybrid vehicles has found a way to please nearly everyone. With millions of cars on the road and the polar ice caps melting quickly enough to actually see them do so, environmentalists will not rest until there is real change to how we do things in this society. And while all electric vehicles are still somewhat marginalized, oil companies have been placated by the fact that their introduction has been slow and gradual. Now we just need to get behind the wheel.

Electric vehicles are becoming more and more popular with city dwellers. People who have long commutes or who want to take road trips wouldn’t do well with an electric vehicle because they can only travel so far before they have to be plugged in and charged up. If you live in the city, though, and have a short commute each day, an electric vehicle can be a great way to really reduce your carbon footprint. They cost a little bit to buy, but they’re less expensive to own, so it helps out your wallet and the planet. That’s a winning situation for everyone involved.

With that in mind, you might not be in a position to buy an electric vehicle right now. If you’re trying to save money for one and still owe a lot on the vehicle you’ll be trading in, consider a refinance auto loan. The less you owe on your trade-in vehicle and the more money you have in the bank, the better you’ll feel about getting your electric car. Once you get it, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and instructions carefully. You’ll want to take good care of your new car and make it last for a very long time.

Be sure to plug it in and charge it properly. It won’t use that much electricity, so you don’t have to worry about your bill going up. You’ll be saving much more in gasoline than you’ll be spending in electricity, so don’t let that worry or stop you. Keep your electric car clean and out of the elements when you can. It’s great if you can park it in a garage where it will be protected. For short commutes, an electric car can be the perfect thing to have and you’ll be doing your part to help out the planet.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last five years you should know that the technology of cars has taken some incredible leaps and bounds making it easier for drivers to save money and to save the environment. Car manufacturers are making electric cars more and more common on the roads today. And with every advancement to the electric car it is becoming more comfortable for average drivers to feel comfortable with one.

When the electric car first came out there was one big knock on the cars — they looked awful. They generally looked like concept cars as opposed to the kinds of cars people were driving. And while it would be ideal to think no one cares if their car stands out, the fact of the matter is they do and they did back then too. So, as the technology advanced, so did the idea that people wanted the same kinds of cars they had been driving for years but rather with electric capabilities, but not fully electric.

Another problem the electric car makers encountered was the lack of power an electric car could produce. In the city this perceived lack of power wasn’t a problem in stop and go, low speed driving, but once a car got onto the expressway they were supposed to be able to have enough punch to keep up with the fast and heavy flow of traffic.

So what the great minds at the car makers decided to do was create a car that ran on electricity at slow speeds and gas at higher speeds, eliminating the lack of punch. The other benefits from there were noticeable. Not only was this car saving you money on gas but also on auto insurance New York residents had to buy and even tax breaks from the government. And the age of the electric car was born.

A lot of environmentally savvy people (who are also pejoratively known as tree huggers and eco geeks) think that hybrid and pure electric vehicles are the best thing that could ever happen to our world. After all, they do not require the burning of fossil fuels, and so they produce far fewer or even absolutely no greenhouse gas emissions. So far, this theory has held true. The hybrid vehicles produced thus far have demonstrated much better in city fuel economy than their gas guzzling counterparts have. And while this is a great environmental benefit right now, this might end up having a problem down the road, so to speak. Of course, we may also find a way around this issue.

For an automobile that uses electricity to function, it obviously needs batteries. In the case of every known hybrid or electric car, a rather large number of batteries. In the case of some of the Tesla cars, for instance, there are essentially several thousand cellular phone batteries inside each car, being used to store its electricity. But as any person who has ever had a rechargeable battery can attest, it may only be successfully recharged so many times. And once that number of times has been reached and exceeded, there is going to be the issue of what to do about the batteries. Obviously, they can be removed and replaced with new ones every so often (which may eventually become a standard thing to talk about, the same way oil is to be changed roughly every three months or 3,000 miles). But what are we going to do with the old batteries that mechanics remove from these cars?

One option is going to be simply throwing them away. This is the major threat that needs to be addressed. While we could most likely recycle the vast majority of batteries (and even mandate that all electric car batteries be recyclable), the reality is that people don’t do things that way. Most people would rather drive around with a used tire in the trunk than pay a little to dispose of it.

Electric cars are an inevitable development. It only makes sense that sooner or later, our species would decide that burning a limited resource that is typically controlled by psychotic dictators is probably not the best possible idea. So we are finally developing cars that are practical to get us from point A to point B, are not insanely expensive, meet all of the necessary safety standards that all cars need to meet, and look good enough that people would pay to drive them around. Needless to say, combining all of these qualities into a vehicle has not been that easy. That was probably why it has taken so long to get to the point where electric cars are actually coming out in sufficient numbers that they make a substantial difference. There is still some novelty to them, though.

One problem we are seeing with nearly every electric vehicle is that there are practicality issues. While most people who commute less than 30 miles to work should have no problem whatsoever going through their commute, charging the car at night, and never have to worry about it, there are people who commute much further. And of course, there is the issue of long trips. While most people take airplanes when they go more than a hundred miles or so, some people still prefer to drive. We wouldn’t have so many highways if we didn’t intend to drive on them, after all.

If you are going to be going further than your car’s range, you have two different options. You can stay the night somewhere on the way, or you can swap out the batteries. Considering the idea that driving for two hours means you would have to stop and recharge for between six and ten hours, the trip would be massively inefficient. The more likely solution is that there would need to be some battery changing stations, at which your discharged batteries would be swapped out for a set of freshly charged ones. One problem with this is, outside of Tokyo Japan, nobody seems to be setting up such an infrastructure.

If you have seen the advertisements and previews for most electric cars, you have most likely been drooling over the idea that you will never need to change the oil, watch gas prices generally go up and occasionally down, or worry that your grandchildren will be living in a bad Kevin Costner movie (Waterworld, that is). You have most likely noticed that the quality of an electric car is judged by how quickly it can get from 0 to 60 miles per hour, and by how many miles it can get on a full charge. While the first factor is only a useful metric if you really like being able to go fast very quickly, the second part of that equation applies to everyone who is not just going to use their electric car to go to the grocery store down the street once a week.

If your car is rated to have 80 miles of range, and you want to go on a 100 mile trip, you are going to find yourself in a quandary sometime around mile 70. At that point, you will not be able to go back (or even come close to being able to do so), and you will not be able to get anywhere near your destination. So you had better have a plan for what you are going to do about your rapidly discharging batteries by that point. Fortunately, someone has already come up with a great idea. Instead of a bunch of gas stations along every major highway, we need a bunch of battery swapping stations in similarly strategic locations.

If your batteries are getting close to dying, you could simply swap them out for a freshly charged set of batteries that someone at the gas station would be keeping on hand, for just such a situation as yours. It is a fairly even trade of goods for goods, and the station owner would be paid for the convenience of letting you rapidly get on your way. It might be even fun to see a pit crew come out and change batteries.

A lot of people are of the impression that driving a hybrid car is extremely ecologically friendly. But while they are pointed in the right direction, they are not going far enough with it. This is a little bit like someone suggesting that regularly contributing to a savings account is extremely shrewd financial planning. Simply put, you can do a whole lot better than a mere hybrid vehicle. With a pure electric vehicle, all you have to do is plug in, let it sit for a few hours, and let the power grid fuel up your car. It carries the advantages that there are power outlets just about everywhere in a city, you will never need to worry about oil prices again, and you have no chance of ever spilling any smelly electricity on yourself.

Believe it or not, though, this is not the best way to drive greenly. Since most households and businesses out there get their electricity from power plants which burn fossil fuels, the process of charging up is still going to put greenhouse gases into the air. And since the whole objective here is to take greenhouse gas emissions as close to absolute zero as is humanly possible, we really do need to work as hard as possible on doing every possible thing to make greenhouse gases go the way of the dodo bird. One great way to do that is to use the green power option that a lot of electric companies are beginning to offer their customers.

The green power option has come out because a lot of people want to get their electricity from renewable power sources. Instead of relying on unsustainable, environmentally unfriendly practices, we can now get all of our power from sources like solar farms, wind farms and land fills. Yes, believe it or not, garbage produces methane, which burns very cleanly and can be used to turn turbines and produce electricity. And since this electricity can be used to power an electric vehicle (or better yet, all of them), we really do have the power to eliminate greenhouse gases.

The technology for electric cars has existed for over 100 years now. And yet, how many serious attempts have there been, from an auto manufacturer’s standpoint, to produce a line of electric vehicles to be used in the normal lives of everyday people? Typically, the only times auto makers throw around the notion of electric cars is when there is a serious problem with oil. When some foreign dictator decides that the wells need to be shut down, in order to teach us a lesson, electric car talks begin. Once the oil flows regularly again, these talks fall by the wayside. As we get into a period where nobody is completely sure how much oil is left in the world, these talks have come back to the forefront. But if we suddenly figure out that there are huge reserves on the Moon, or something, historical precedent suggests that the recent spate of electric vehicles will be reduced to being little more than collector’s items and curiosities.

Is it possible that the driving public just likes gas powered cars better than it likes electric ones? Is there just something intrinsically better about the driving experience of putting gas into a tank, driving for awhile, and then repeating the process, while the car roars underneath your guiding hands? This is very possible. After all, human beings respond to loud sounds. It has even been suggested by laboratory studies that human females become sexually excited by loud sounds. This is probably why even the drummers in a band tend to receive ample amounts of female attention after the show.

But there may be a slightly more bizarre, left brained reason why drivers might prefer to drive gas powered cars as opposed to electric ones. There is a certain desire people have to do a repetitive task every so often. It provides a level of comfort in the sameness of it all. For the same reason people mow their lawns, when they could easily just have them covered over with asphalt, people derive a sort of contentment from putting fuel into their tanks.

If you have ever seen a lot of modern hybrid and purely electric cars out on the road, you have most likely noticed that they tend to look… weird. Now, some people most likely find the designs to be stylish and interesting. The term “unique” certainly applies in nearly every case. Unfortunately, unique is the nicest way to put it. The more general expression is “weird in a less than attractive way.” Simply put, a lot of hybrids and electrics just look like someone got the idea that to be a good car and be powered primarily by electricity, it has to look strange. Fortunately, this is not the case with every car that uses electricity, but it is with a significant number of them.

In some cases, one has to wonder about the “environmental wacko” effect. Simply put, if a person intends to spend between 25 and 50 percent more money on a car, simply because it will get greater gas mileage than a less expensive pure gas car, a very real and fairly prominent set of people want the entire world to know about it. How much would people like that hate the situation if they spent all of that money, and ended up driving a car which looked just the same as all the rest of the cars do? That group would be ashamed; they might even begin customizing their cars, in order to go with their green-living hippie self images. That might be entertaining, and would definitely be a fun cultural phenomenon.

The good news is, the ugly electric car phenomenon might have just been an early trend. Keep in mind that a lot of electric car manufacturers do not have the massive budgets that Toyota or Ford do, and can not afford to hire the most creative and talented designers from all over the world. When in doubt, a highly efficient car that resembles a box is better than a pretty gas guzzler. At least, it’s the superior alternative if you are dealing with the kinds of people who really care about their fuel efficiency.
